Plant your shoreline to help save our endangered species

Updated: May 12, 2023

Many of our beloved creatures that live in or around our lakes are endangered and we often feel helpless to do anything about it. Well, there is something very important that you can do to help!

Endangered species are often threatened because of habitat degradation, especially along the shoreline and in wetlands. If you own shoreline property, one of the best things you can do is have a naturalized buffer zone along the lake. This involves planting native grasses, shoreline plants, and shrubs.

You can get a great deal on purchasing native shrubs and trees through our 2023 URLA Tree Program and Shoreline Restoration Initiative. We have 12 varieties of shrubs and 5 varieties of tree saplings of various sizes for you to purchase. Bundles of 10 seedlings cost between $2.50 and $4.50 or if you prefer something larger, potted shrubs and trees are only $10.50 to $19.00

Now is the time to order your native trees and shrubs for spring pickup in Early May. Order before December 15, 2022.

You can also take advantage of the RCVA Shoreline Naturalization Program, where their staff will come to see your waterfront, advise you on what to plant, offer you good deals on the recommended plant materials and plant them for you.

Ensuring good water quality and the survival of our lake wildlife is up to you! Let’s make Upper Rideau a healthy place for our creatures and our families.
